What are you waiting for? 3 Tips to Help You Begin Now

It's that time of year again.

Yup, you guessed it. New Year's Resolution time.

According to Statistic Brain losing weight was the top resolution in 2012. Not surprising. Weeks of overeating and lack of sleep start to add up and people are ready for a change. Memberships to fitness centers surge. People begin to rethink their diet and stress levels. Jan 1 becomes the goal date to begin (ok maybe Jan. 2 for some). Until then, people will go on doing what they want.

"Gonna eat what I want now, because after Jan. 1st , I won't be able to."

Sound familiar?

My question is... why wait? Why not start now?

Possible answers:

* There is something momentous about being able to say you started a major life change on Jan 1.
*Waiting til after New Year's Eve ensures that any resolution will not interfere with the overindulging that tends to occur.
*It gives people an excuse to keep doing what we are doing a little bit longer while we get "ready" to change.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think any resolution should be begun on a day where you immediately set yourself up for failure (major holidays for example). What I am saying is that there will always be an excuse, so just start. Start now. If you mess up, start again.

Here is 3 tips to get started on your wellness goals (or any goal) now. Today.

1. Just say NO to the common excuses!

-Too busy at work
-Too expensive
-Not enough time
-Need to lose weight first
-Need to feel better first
-When the kids are a little older

Even if you are not ready, act as if you are. Think about how you would look and act if you were ready and do it- play the part, wear the mask, fake it til you make it or better yet, fake it til you become it. In short- JUST DO IT!

Your actions can change your mind. A great example of this is smiling. Even if you are not happy, if you smile you can trick your brain into thinking you are causing actual changes in your body chemistry. It's the same with this. Try it now. You may not be completely ready or prepared, mentally or physically, but pretending you are and doing it can put the wheels in motion that can help you be successful.

2. Remove or plan around any obstacles

What's stopping you from starting? Is it a real obstacle, or an obstacle created by your mind? Is it too expensive? Do you not have enough time? You may have to rethink your priorities. People tend to find the time and the money for things that they truly believe in and want to do. Use your resources. Be creative. If money is a problem there are plenty of FREE exercise videos on You Tube. There are also tons of resources online for eating healthy on a budget.  If time is your concern spend 15 minutes less on Facebook and take that 15 minutes to do something active. Really think about what priority wellness (or your goal) deserves in your life.

3. Take a small step today (no need to wait)

 Go ahead-you can do it!

-Drink a glass of water
-Take a flight of stairs
-Go to bed a half hour earlier
-Focus on your breathing for a few minutes in the morning

Sometimes thinking and worrying about what we need to do is worse than the actual doing. Then we do it and realize it's not quite so bad. By taking a small step today you pave the way for more steps.

So what are you waiting for? Wellness is waiting...
